Ankle-Brachial Index Testing

Ankle-Brachial Index Testing

Ankle-Brachial Index Testing

The ankle-brachial index compares blood pressure at the ankle with blood pressure at the arm. The ratio is a simple, reliable indicator of reduced circulation in the legs.

When It Is Typically Used

  • Diabetes Care — Poor circulation contributes to the foot problems diabetes can cause.
  • Leg Pain With Walking — Cramping that eases with rest is a classic sign of reduced flow.
  • Vascular Risk Assessment — Results inform decisions about further vascular evaluation.

Working Alongside Other On-Site Services

Testing is often done at the same visit as diabetic foot checks and lab monitoring.

What to Expect

The test uses blood pressure cuffs and takes about fifteen minutes. Nothing is injected and no preparation is needed.
