EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies
EMG & Nerve Conduction Studies
Nerve conduction studies measure how quickly signals travel along a nerve, and EMG records electrical activity in muscle. Together they localize the cause of numbness, tingling, or weakness.
When It Is Typically Used
- Diabetic Neuropathy — Nerve damage is a recognized complication of uncontrolled diabetes.
- Numbness and Tingling — Testing distinguishes a pinched nerve from a more general neuropathy.
- Weakness — Results help separate nerve problems from muscle problems.
Working Alongside Other On-Site Services
Findings are interpreted with lab work from the on-site laboratory, since several causes of neuropathy show up in bloodwork.
What to Expect
Testing involves brief electrical pulses and, for EMG, a fine needle electrode. Most studies take under an hour.
